A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
