A Story of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book a place to stay after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more individuals with such compassion.

It seems I seemed confused because a woman saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. I was able to use the bathroom and somewhere safe and safe to spend the night.

In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she took being a woman letting a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not go to the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of kindness. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her good deed many times over. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
