Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.

The group of women also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
