England's Emma Coates Leaves England U23 Position to Become Head Coach at NWSL's Bay FC
In a significant career move, the former England youth boss has resigned her post with the Young Lionesses national team to be appointed head coach for National Womenâs Soccer League expansion side Bay FC.
A New Chapter
Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who was at the helm of the California club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya announced in September his intention to step down at the end of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the league standings.
âIt has been a privilege to serve my time with the FA,â stated Coates. âThe experience has been formative both professionally and personally. I am now prepared and eager to test my abilities in a new environment.â
Proven Developer
Since taking charge in 2023, Coates managed the England U23s through fixtures including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. She will be joined to America is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the Womenâs Super League.
Kay Cossington, a former FA womenâs technical director, praised Coates's credentials: âShe is both an superb manager, but she also has a demonstrated history of nurturing talent to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of teams and environments and has the strategic outlook we were searching for,â added Cossington.
Bay FC's Journey
The club experienced a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its inaugural campaign before struggling to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their time with us and extend our best wishes with their new challenge. They have played a crucial part in bolstering the progression route between the WU23s and the senior squad.â
âTheir work has directly impacted the development of many young players who have gone on to become senior Lionesses,â he added.
Player Progression
After succeeding Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the advancement of a number of players to the England senior side, including playmaker Lucia Kendallâwho netted her debut Lionesses goalâand forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
The search for successors to fill the roles has begun, as the FA looks to continue the development of the youth national team in the future.
