From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Mixed.
Right-leaning responses to the limited release of documents related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Disclosure
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely censored, and many of the men depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for transparency that preceded the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained little new information.
