Large columns of dark smoke were observed billowing from an vicinity in the area of the main base of the American Fifth Fleet in Bahrain's capital, Manama. The extent of any impact is uncertain and the United States has not commented.

Missile Defenses Activated

Elsewhere across the region, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the State of Kuwait - all home to US military bases - stated they have engaged and destroyed incoming projectiles in their territorial skies.

In the Qatari capital, Qatar's defence ministry announced it had successfully engaged several missiles apparently targeting the Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest US military installation in the Middle East.

Iran's Declared Retaliation

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement it was attacking American facilities and interests as part of military campaign "Truthful Promise 4", in retaliation for the attack on the Islamic Republic carried out by the US and Israel on Saturday.

That initial attack - initiated at around 06:15 GMT - has so far targeted locations associated with the Iranian leadership, with President Trump encouraging the Iranian people to rise up against the government.

Wider Impacts

In Israel, sirens were heard nationwide after the Israeli military stated it had detected an incoming Iranian missile barrage.

The defence ministry of the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that the country has been targeted by a "a blatant attack involving Iranian ballistic missiles".

"Emirati air defenses dealt with the missiles with notable success and shot down a series of missiles," it added.

Officials reported missile fragments fell on a populated district in Abu Dhabi, resulting in some structural damage and the death of one civilian.

The United States Air Force operates from the Al Dhafra base, to the south of the Emirati capital, along with the UAE Air Force.
