JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution Strives to Resolve the Series' Major Debate
JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not entirely an brand-new film. Instead, the latest cinematic release from the JuJutsu Kaisen supernatural series acts as a recap of the show's sophomore season stitched together with the opening installments of its upcoming season, which kicks off the Culling Games storyline from the manga series. This positions Execution, which just got a fresh preview, the earliest way to watch the beginning of the upcoming season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The film debuts in Japanese theaters on November 7, and in North America on Dec. 5.
The Culling Games Storyline
In the Culling Games storyline, Top-tier jujutsu user Yuta Okkotsu makes his entrance into the show and is assigned by jujutsu higher-ups to execute his classmate Yuji Itadori. Their much-anticipated fight takes place for the first time on the big screen, and if the animators at the studio have a treat as the two-part Thunderclap episodes in store for fans this holiday season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may turn out to be the surprise that everyone has hoped for.
The Thunderclap Issue
"Thunderclap" from the second season is frequently praised as a top-tier scene in the history of anime, despite all the controversy in 2023 when the series first premiered. It was reported that the animation team were enduring crunch conditions to the degree, and the released version that was shown at the time was incomplete and reportedly not what the team initially intended.
The Legendary Fight
The scene showcases a long-awaited battle between two powerful sorcerers, Sukuna versus Mahoraga. It includes innovative art style, excellent direction, and intense action. A follow-up physical media version allowed the team to insert new moments to expand the fight. So it was plausible Execution could enhance the fight further. However, viewing the recent teaser, it's difficult to determine if that battle has undergone further polishing. It'd be a shame if it didn't, because a moment so epic has to be seen on the biggest screen with the finest quality available.
Season Two's Achievement
The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen boosted the show to become the award-winning series of 2024, and when episodes 40 and 41 were aired consecutively, it was the focus of attention for weeks in the anime community. Viewers knew about the issues behind the scenes, which made them admire what they witnessed even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the home release, released on March 18, would add any additional scenes to the battle or to see if it was refined somewhat, and were overjoyed to see just that, alongside reshades, enhanced animation, and different color grading.
The Film's Potential
But the Blu-ray can only refine what has already been presented in the original airing, whereas the movie has the potential to properly present the moment with further changes and new animations entirely.
A Crowning Achievement
As it stands, these two episodes serve as the magnum opus of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be treated as such by the animation team, especially considering the debate they faced at the time. It's drawn the focus of viewers all over the world, and the Culling Games storyline is a highly awaited story of next year. If Mappa wants to begin the year strongly, showcase the series' best moment once again in cinemas with the best interpretation we've witnessed to date.
