The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

Everton: The team head to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
