The Two Fatalities Revealed in Brown University Attack as Law Enforcement Persist in Hunt for Perpetrator.

Both young individuals who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack on the university campus were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the sole person of interest in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s chapter of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also posted condolences on social media, stating: “It's indescribable. Remembering her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”

The Second Victim

The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.

The shooter opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the Associated Press.

Police that searched the inn found two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was detained, the news agency reported.

The Wounded Victims

Regarding the nine injured, one student was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a independent school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, loved ones, and peers and grieve for of his potential.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US higher education institution with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records.
