A large-scale search and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Initiated

The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least 9 sailors, as stated by a navy statement.

The boats had been scheduled to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Relief to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the island.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Wider Political Climate

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

International organizations have since warned of ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50k surgeries called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Political pressure have intensified over the past months, with comments from different representatives emphasizing the delicate nature of bilateral relations.

Responding to recent comments, a senior government figure declared that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that initial phases of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to find the boats and ensure the security of the crews.

At this time, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
