Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception

Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?

So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We have some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
