While Beachgoers Fled Attack, Viral Photo Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, like many local residents, detected loud noises ringing out across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching states. Exiting her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the street, speaking to a couple who had rushed up the slope still dripping wet, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to flee, carrying that sizeable pack and unshod … He moved at something that surely every part of you would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Symbol of Bravery During Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many acts of courage in the aftermath of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams attending to dozens of the injured.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the neighbourhood, with the beach facility next to the scene of the incident transforming into a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, for instance going into the water to save people needing help.

After the tragedy, statements of appreciation flooded in. One post expressed thanks for the individuals who showed that “goodness will always triumph over hatred”.

The squad of lifeguards published a message, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the compassion for our team,” the organization stated. “When ready, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional lifeguards, stated that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the shooting began right into late that night.

“We have heard so many powerful narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” said a local official.

“Our lifeguards exhibit altruism every day in keeping our internationally renowned beaches protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we focus on just how much light we have witnessed in the presence of such hatred.”
